About the appeal
Echo, the grand old lady and wise leader of the EB elephant family in Kenya, has died of old-age. Echo, with her distinctive crossed tusks, was made world-famous by BBC TV's renowned 'Echo of the Elephants' series. She was probably the best-known and most well-loved wild elephant in the world, and leaves behind a family of 39 elephants - her sisters, daughters, grandchildren, great grandchildren and nieces. In her memory, the Born Free Foundation has launched this appeal to raise funds to protect the remaining EBs and the other elephants of Amboseli National Park. The Park, at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, has always been a sanctuary for elephants. But brutal poaching for ivory is on the increase in Kenya, including the area surrounding the Park."Please help Born Free combat poaching and keep Echo's elephant family safe. Now that really would be a fitting tribute to this remarkable 'old lady' - Thank you."

About The Born Free Foundation
The Born Free Foundation is a dynamic international wildlife charity, founded by Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers following their starring roles in the classic film 'Born Free.' Today, led by their son Will Travers, Born Free takes action worldwide for wild animal welfare and compassionate conservation. From small beginnings, Born Free has grown into a global force for wildlife and 2009 is our 25th Anniversary year.Born Free believes wildlife belongs in the wild and works to phase-out zoos and stop captive animal exploitation. Born Free rescues individuals from lives of misery in tiny cages and gives them lifetime care in spacious sanctuaries. Born Free protects threatened species including lions, elephants, tigers, gorillas, wolves, bears, marine turtles and many more in their natural habitat, working with local communities to help people and wildlife live together without conflict.
